FibersFiber Form Matters: Filament, Staple, Fabric and UD
High-performance fiber is sold in several physical forms, and the form usually decides the next processing step more than the polymer itself does. Filament yarn, chopped fiber, staple fiber, woven fabric and unidirectional tape each enter a different manufacturing route.
The forms in this range
The high-performance fiber portfolio covers PBO and Aramid III products across filament, chopped fiber, staple fiber, fabric and unidirectional formats.
- PBO filament yarn.
- PBO chopped fiber and staple fiber.
- PBO fabric specifications and performance.
- PBO grades and physical properties, including CG-PBO-HM, CG-PBO-AS and CG-PBO-NR.
- Aramid III product introduction and properties, including F-358, F-368, F-378 and F-398.
- Aramid III fabric specifications, including F-3P60, F-3P170, F-3S170, F-3P200 and F-3P340, plus soft and hard UD.
What the forms imply
Continuous filament is the input for weaving, winding, pultrusion and unidirectional tape production. Chopped and staple fiber are the inputs for nonwovens, spun yarns and short-fiber reinforcement.
Fabric is a finished textile specification: the stated PBO and Aramid III fabric tables describe weave, width and areal density, and the Aramid III tables include plain weave and four-harness satin weave with widths from 60 to 150 cm and areal densities from 61 to 340 g/m².
Unidirectional formats are described in both soft and hard variants. The soft UD specification is stated as thermoplastic at 10%, width 1000 ± 10 mm.
Property direction of each family
PBO grades are stated with density in the range 1.54 to 1.56 g/cm³ and single filament diameter of 11 to 18 μm. Tensile strength is stated as 27.5 to 38 cN/dTex for dry yarn and at least 5.0 to at least 5.8 GPa for impregnated strand.
Aramid III is stated with density of approximately 1.44 g/cm³ and monofilament diameter of 14 to 18 μm, with tensile strength by the impregnation method of at least 4400, 4800 and 4400 MPa across the F-358, F-368 and F-378 grades.
Choosing a form
Decide first what the fiber becomes: a woven textile, a reinforcement in a moulded part, a wound structure or a tape. That answer selects the form, and the grade is then confirmed against the property table for that form.
